Week 9 Story: Ekalayva's Robot

Image
The neon lights shined bright on the dark alleyways of Haste City. The Pandava brothers shielded themselves from the lights as they snuck through the winding backstreets, dodging and weaving to avoid anyone in their way. As they approached a metal door, they heard the clanking and crashing characteristic of bot fighting, an outlawed sport. Their head engineer, Arjuna, took the lead and knocked the secret code. Three hard knocks, followed by two soft ones. Soon, the metal door creaked open, and the men entered in the room.   Bot fighting was known to be ruthless, with unimaginable riches ready for the taking. The stakes were high, and the competition was fierce. But everyone knew of the Pandava brothers and their amazing feats; their robots were known far and wide to be the very best in Haste City. Arjuna led the brothers, and was taught by their mentor and guru, Drona, who retired years before from bot fighting. Since bot fighting was illegal, the Panda...

Week 7 Story: The Parrot and the Monkeys

Image
There once was a family of four brother monkeys living in a jungle. Green and flourishing, the jungle trees provided the monkeys a home and delicious source of food. From figs to bananas, they were always surrounded by fruit. However, one year, the rain never came; the sky was clear with not a cloud in sight. The sun shone harshly as the jungle trees wilted away. The monkeys, yearning for some sweet fruit, searched far and wide for a surviving fruit tree. With growling stomachs, they finally stumbled upon the last golden treasure in the entire jungle: a banana tree with ripe bananas. The youngest monkey leaped forward to grab a banana when a booming voice asserted:   “Stop! This tree is mine. Don’t touch it until you answer my questions. After answering, take all the bananas you please.”   The youngest monkey looked up and saw a small, colorful parrot. Unintimidated, the monkey ignored the bird’s request and went to grab a banana. As his hand reached...

Week 5 Story: Rama and the Angry Hermit

Image
King Janak was in possession of Lord Shiva’s bow and demanded that any suitor for his daughter must bend the powerful bow. While many men tried, none could wield the might weapon, until Rama attempted to do so. As Rama ascended the platform, his brother Lakshman prayed, not for his brother’s strength but for the stability of the world. Lakshman asked to hold the earth firm, as his Rama’s strength may snap the bow. As Rama held the weapon, the bow began to glow. When he bent the bow, it was as if the sky was bending too, until it finally cracked. As the bow shattered, the world shook as the sound echoed across the Earth. Elephants trumpeted in fear, and kings grabbed their weapons. Even the gods covered their ears.   Relief in the Hazare Rama Temple showing Rama breaking the bow. Image
There was once a teenage boy named Varun, and it was rumored that he ran faster than the wind. An expert sprinter, Varun told all that his speed was due to his loyal German Shepherd, Hanu. As a young boy, Varun adopted Hanu when he was a puppy. Both Varun and Hanu were inseparable; whether it’s playing fetch or taking a walk, Varun always spent his time taking care of Hanu. As they grew older, they fell in love with racing, and the duo would run across the winding roads. Their sprints were a sight to behold, with the whole town holding their breath in anticipation to see who won the race.   One day, Hanu woke up with a hunger to run like no other; he was pacing around the house and could barely contain his excitement. He roamed around the town searching for Varun. When he finally found him, Hanu barked and begged to race, and his excitement was infectious. After what felt like hours of whining, Varun said,   “You want to race, boy? Let’s go for a quick run. We’ll make ...

In suburban America, there once was a boastful and arrogant father who prided himself of his strength. While many men tried, none could defeat him and therefore he claimed to be the Arm Wrestling King, a title he held with great pride.  Two men arm wrestling. The mere thought filled him with fear, and he was well aware of his son’s impressive strength. To distract his son and preserve his ego, the father devised a plan to keep the adolescent away from threatening his title. On the day of the cookout, the father disguised his scheme by politely asking his son for a favor. “Hey bud, I’m going to need you to drive down to the Jerry Mart and bring 10 cases of their finest craft beer. Be quick, we’ve got guests coming in 20 minutes.” Without hesitation, his ...
